Günter Grass and his wife, Ute, spent six months, From August 1987 to January class quarters, in two suburbs, amid the crowding, the noise, the unmitigated heat and humidity, the dirt. They took only brief excursions to other parts of the country, and to Bangladesh.

Thoughout, Grass kept a diary in words and drawing that record everyday sights; slums ringed by mountains of garbage; rats scurrying underfoot, crows and vultures flapping close overhead; hundreds of children gathering sticks and breaking off branches for firewood -- which is why nothing grows again, except children. Families, pavement dwellers they are called, sleep on sidewalks, along walls, each sleeping a different sleep. Young men sit on their haunches, in their faces the resigned anxiety, the concentrated gravity of those no longer have anything to wait for. People are starving, dying in apathy. "Ignore the misery," Write Grass. "Customs invites you to ingnore it."
